When you have decided to buy a television with an LCD screen there are two main things to look for. One is the number of native pixels, which should be at least 1280x720 for good clarity. The most desirable count is 1920x1080, but that is only on the larger screens and is very costly. And if you are a big tv and movie buff it might be worth it.
One of the main weaknesses with the LCD screen is that it tends to show a blurry picture when the action is fast. While there has been great improvement in this area recently, there are still some screens that are not as good as others. Check the Motion Response Time for your choice of screen. If none is stated, be wary of buying it. If it is stated, it should be 12ms (milliseconds) or 8 ms. If you watch lots of sports, 8ms is the one to get.
Contrast ratio is also important. If it is low, the picture will look muddy, if it's too high, a washed out picture will result. Make sure the contrast ratio is at least 1500:1, especially on a screen that is 32 inches or larger. Other things to watch for are brightness and viewing angle. This will depend to a great extent on your lighting and seating arrangements.
